Fernando Llorente got his first so also Napoli needing to play catch-ups as Juventus closes on stuttering Roma as Bayo Salau rounds up the curious from wk 12 serie A games.

The last time Napoli conceded three goals on their travels was also in Turin, but a 5-3 victory at Torino on March 30. The Partenopei had been unbeaten in five competitive games. The Azzurri have won only one of their last 18 visits to Juventus, a 3-2 result in 2009, earning five draws and 12 defeats between Serie A and B. They also haven’t kept a clean sheet here since the goalless stalemate in May 1982.
Fernando Llorente scored his second Serie A goal, the fourth for the Bianconeri in all competition. He became the first ever Spanish player to score against a Spanish goalkeeper in the Italian top flight. Andrea Pirlo went up to 53 in the top flight and 24 of them were direct free kicks. Paul Pogba rose to nine in Serie A, his second in as many games.
Rafa Benitez had never previously lost to Juventus, managing a win and two 0-0 draws between Liverpool and Inter.

Roma conceded their first goal at the Stadio Olimpico since Napoli’s 2-1 win in May, ending a 550-minute clean sheet. Sassuolo are unbeaten in their last three away fixtures, amassing five points, thanks to Domenico Berardi’s fourth goal in two games.
Chievo still haven’t beaten Milan in their last 14 League meetings, home and away, but kept a clean sheet against them at the Bentegodi for the first time. The Flying Donkeys are without a goal in 302 minutes and have the mostanaemic attack in the Division with just seven in 12 games. Alberto Paloschi marked his 100th Serie A game against his parent club.
The Rossoneri have amassed just two points from their last six competitive games and for the first time since 2007 are without a victory in four Serie A rounds. With 13 points by Week 12, this is their worst start since 1981-82, when on nine points they were eventually relegated.
Inter hadn’t won two Serie A home ties on the bounce since December 2012.Yuto Nagatomo set a new personal best with his third goal of the campaign, seven in the League overall. Livorno have lost their last eight consecutive visits to San Siro and won here only twice in 1934 and 1942, losing 14 and drawing three. Bizarrely, the Amaranto haven’t won any of their last 22 Serie A fixtures played on a Saturday since a 3-1 over Palermo on April 22 2006. This was Livorno’s 600th top flight match (excluding play-offs) with 168 victories and 264 losses.

Javier Zanetti returned for his 604th Serie A appearance. Only Paolo Maldini has amassed more in the all-time charts with 647. The Nerazzurri have benefited from three own goals this season, a record in Europe’s top five Leagues shared with Manchester City and Nantes. Roma have received two, their best own goal haul since four in the 2000-01 Scudetto-winning campaign.
Fiorentina have conceded 11 goals in their last six home games. Giuseppe Rossi rose to 20 Serie A career goals with his fourth brace, netting 11 in 12 rounds. The last Viola player to better that tally at this stage was Luca Toni with 15 goals in 2005-06. Sampdoria suffered a third consecutive defeat, their worst run since December 2012. The Blucerchiati have scraped just three draws from eight visits to Florence after a 2-0 win in 2004. Manolo Gabbiadini scored his 10th top flight goal, while it was Angelo Palombo’s 300th appearance.

Lazio managed just three draws and a defeat since their last Stadio Tardini success, 2-0 in 2010. Parma have picked up one point from three rounds, but ended their 333-minute goal drought. Alessandro Lucarelli bagged his 16thSerie A goal, the first since September 2012. Keita Balde scored his debut Serie A strike at the fourth appearance, though it was his first start. The Aquile are still without an away victory in Serie A since their 3-1 at Inter on May 8, followed by three stalemates and four losses.
Genoa notched up three Serie A wins on the trot, something they hadn’t achieved since September 2009. Gian Piero Gasperini has amassed 13 points from an available 18 since replacing Fabio Liverani. Daniele Portanova got his 17th Serie A goal, the first since Napoli 2-3 Bologna on December 16 2012. Juraj Kucka took his career tally to seven, with two in as many games.
Verona fired blanks for only the second time this season after 25 goals in 13 competitive games. The only other side they failed to score past was Roma.
Catania registered their second win of the season, the first under Coach Gigi De Canio, after a 2-0 over Chievo on September 29. Maxi Lopez celebrated his 100th Serie A appearance with the 28th goal, but hadn’t found the net since Sampdoria’s 3-1 loss to Cagliari on March 10. This was his third strike past Udinese, making them his favourite victims with Palermo and Cesena. Udinese have lost four of their last five games and failed to score in each of those defeats. In the last three League meetings with Catania, home and away, the Friulani earned just one point.
Bologna have only ever conquered Bergamo once in 2009, losing 14 and drawing 12 between Serie A and B. Atalanta ended a run of one point from three rounds and Stefano Colantuono enjoyed his 400th match as a professional Coach, 174 of which were victories. Davide Brivio scored his third Serie A goal, the most recent being in Lecce 2-2 Genoa on March 4, and Marko Livaja his fourth. Rolando Bianchi went up to 46 Serie A goals, ending the Rossoblu’s 400-minute drought.
Daniele Conti marked his 300th Serie A appearance with only his second brace, the other achieved against Torino in February. Conti has scored 12 Serie A free kick goals since 2005-06 and only Pirlo has done better in that period with 17.

Torino haven’t won away to Cagliari in Serie A since a 1-0 result in 1991, managing four draws from nine attempts. The Granata extended their winless streak to eight rounds, while Giampiero Ventura has never beaten Cagliari, scraping one point from seven meetings.

CAN ENGLAND BE SECOND TIME LUCKY AT DOWN UNDER?

 By Seun Ajidagba
@seunajidagba

England Cricket National Team would not forget in a hurry year 2010-2011 when the Three lions had the famous sprinkler dance on Australian soil which was to celebrate their First Ashes series victory in Thirty-Two years.
Australia's build-up to the 2013 Ashes series was a time bomb waiting to explode after the Australian Cricket Federation appointed Darren Lehmann who was an assistant to Mickey Arthur to take over as coach some 14 days to the series following a string of poor results. This followed a batting line-up weakened by the previous year's retirements of former captain Ricky Ponting who was the second most successful batsman in test cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar (The Little Master) and Mike Hussey, while opener David Warner was suspended for the start of the series following an off-field incident.
All of the troubles put together gave England a comfortable 3-0 home victory over their familiar foes.

Though the Ashes series between England and Australia which is the most celebrated international cricket rivalry that dates back to 1882 has the smallest cup in the world and are traditionally of five Tests played biennially with the two countries taking turns as host. The Three lions are the current holders, having won the last three series, including the 2013 edition played in England and the Head-to-Head record stands at 31 series win for both countries while five series have been draw but the odds favour  England to get "back-to-back" series as well as retaining the urn.
The 2013–14 Ashes series starting on the 21st of November 2013 to 7th January 2014 will be contested at five venues namely The Gabba, Adelaide Oval, WACA Ground, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Cricket Ground but most importantly on the mind of Captain Micheal Clarke and the entire Australian Cricket National Team is to atone for the disappointment they caused their fans in 2010-2011 when they lost at home for the First time in 32years. As for Captain Alastair Cook of England he would want to write his name in Gold by becoming the First English Captain to win back-to-back Ashes matches on Australian soil for over a century ago.

On 23 September 2013, England and Wales Cricket Board announced a 17-man touring party for the Ashes series which included the usual suspects Captain Alastair Cook, Wicket Keeper and Vice-Captain Matt Prior, Jonny Bairstow Deputy Wicket-Keeper, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root, Graeme Swann, Chris Tremlett and Jonathan Trott.

Former Ireland international bowler Boyd Rankin, New Zealand-born all-rounder Ben Stokes and Zimbabwe-born batsman Gary Ballance all received call-ups despite being uncapped for England in Tests, while opening batsman Michael Carberry, spin bowler Monty Panesar and seamer Chris Tremlett all got call ups. Though Tim Bresnan is suffering from a back injury he still travelled with the squad to Australia.
Based on my years of following cricket I see another victory for England on Australian soil going by the consistency of the players they parade but no disrespect to the Aussies who I consider to be rebuilding after the exit of their great stars in the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symmonds, Mike Hussey, Justin Langer, Glenn McGrath and Damien Martyn.

It’s time for Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Phillip Hughes, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris and Usman Khawaja, the present cricketers in Australia to prove that they can take up the challenge in the absence of their big stars who have called time on an illustrious career. My verdict sees another wild goose chase for the Darren Lehmann (Coach of Australia) tutored side.

MILAN ARE AWOL

Bayo Salau
@xhalaubayo

The worst thing about the Rossoneri right now is not the results, but the performances and mentality, argues Bayo Salau.

There’s no point denying that Milan are in absolute crisis now and facing Barcelona today seemingly look it’s not likely to get any better. A weakened Fiorentina without Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, Mario Gomez and David Pizarro didn’t have to get out of second gear to win 2-0 at San Siro, mainly because the Rossoneri are reduced to either first gear or reverse. They trundle along for 90 minutes and fans wait for the moment they step up the pace to change things around. If it does happen, it is rapidly followed by a defensive disaster.

The calls are out for Massimiliano Allegri to be fired, though I’m not sure what good it would do with the options available. It is true that the team is playing absolutely terrible football and the squad don’t appear to know what they’re supposed to be doing. With Roma, Napoli, Fiorentina and Inter you get the sense these players have a specific plan they worked out in training and know where they are supposed to be at any given moment. Milan’s plan seems to be ‘give the ball to Kaka and Mario Balotelli, then hope for the best.’ It worked in the second half of last season, but SuperMario is now in a permanent sulk between pointless bookings and increasingly embarrassing attempts to win a penalty. Mollycoddling him is just encouraging this self-destructive petulance.

Not only are the Rossoneri not organised, but they have no spark either. Taking the initiative should mean more than running aimlessly at a wall of players or shooting from midfield. Someone also needs to appoint themselves Wall Monitor, because it’s ridiculous that a top flight team doesn’t know how to stand in a line properly. Milan were always bad at defending from set plays, but this isn’t marking we’re talking about – it’s the ability to stand in a spot and not move. Instead of releasing statements on how a free kick was not in the right position or telling Riccardo Montolivo he should argue with the referee more, how about focusing on some of the football school basics?

The real issue with Milan seems to be psychological, as they suffer from crippling arrogance. Have you noticed the only decent performances they have put in this season were when the Rossoneri were considered underdogs? Started strong against Juventus only to fall away, held Barcelona to a draw and attacked Udinese despite an injury crisis. When on paper the stronger team, they just assume they’ll score at some point and don’t push the issue until time is running out.

Coming to the game the world wants to see,Barcelona faces AC Milan in what is perhaps the most opportune time to do so in their previous eight encounters over the past three UEFA Champions League seasons. Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is on the ropes with his job on the line, having struggled to keep his team above mid-table so far this season. The Rossoneri, undergoing their worst league start in over three decades, are pointless in their last three matches in Serie A, and have not won in Champions League Group H since hosting Celtic on Matchday 1. The situation for the Italians is so dire that they must keep tabs on what happens in Amsterdam between AFC Ajax and Celtic FC (who trail Milan by two points) if the Round of 16 is even to be considered.

With both Barça and Milan not looking anywhere near their best the last time they faced at the San Siro fortnight ago, the spoils will go to whomever can show they took away something useful from the match. Both teams had their fair share of bad luck in front of net and if either side’s regular goal scorers can prove even the slightest bit more focused, a spectacular clash awaits the Camp Nou faithful.

Allegri said this week Milan “can’t rest on our laurels,” but that’s precisely the problem. They have no laurels. What this team is resting on is a cold, hard floor with the shrivelled remains of laurels. The sooner they get that into their heads, the better, because time is running out.

HOMOGENEOUS PLAY DIVERSE SWEDEN

Bayo Salau
@xhalaubayo

Elias Andersson combined with Gustav Engvall for Sweden’s first goal of the U-17 World Cup. These are two blond-haired, blue-eyed boys with very Swedish names, but it soon became clear that the yellow-clad team competing in UAE is anything but homogeneous. There are 11 different nationalities in the 21-man squad, with players tracing their roots to ports as far as Africa, Asia and Europe.

But could that mean that the diverse roots that lies within be the reason for their run so far impressive in the tournament.

Taking a closer look at the diverse Sweden team, combining in total harmony on the world stage - serving up their meatballs with spices from all corners of the globe one would be fired up for an interesting show down with Nigeria U-17 side for the second time in the competition. But for the debutant how has the journey been with the diverse nationals of different root thus far.
The story begins with Valmir Berisha. Born in Albania before moving with his family to Sweden when he was two, he’s scored four goals in a menacing and entertaining display. The flamboyant No 9,  now has four goals ahead of a semi-final rematch with Nigeria in Dubai.
Gentrit Citaku also has Albanian roots and his delicate through ball picked out Erdal Rakip, of Turkish origins, who slotted home elegantly to send Sweden on their way to victory in the quarter-final against Honduras. Having already made his senior team debut for Swedish giants Malmo, it’s likely this won’t be the last Sweden jersey the impressive Rakip pulls on before his career is up.

The  tall, powerful and dark-skinned Carlos Strandberg,is another and  Noah Sonko, a tall and rangy centre-back who traces his roots back to the Gambia, a west African country not far from Nigeria made this team really fearful.  One thing to be highlighted is that Swedish players are known for being strong and fast, and have been resilient in all manners before the face of the world. Huge technical ability of the guys from the Balkans and the good stuff the African guys possess too-power and technique, then they should be more than just a threat to any team that comes forth.

Wherever their roots originate, this Swedish team have amazing chemistry, humility, good humour and, perhaps most of all, resilience. They lost their top midfielder, Isak Ssewankambo – who hails from Uganda – to injury after only 15 minutes of football at the finals. With arguably their best midfielder sent home to Chelsea, where he’s already agreed to professional terms, the Swedes soldiered on without him.
With the diversity a strong point of their stellar run so far,one will wonder if their defence, will have the same level of comfort when the goal-hungry Golden Eaglets come calling a second time.

DIEGO TRULY WANTS TO PLAY..

The most lethal player in Spain right now isn't Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale or even Lionel Messi. It's Atletico's Diego Costa, the man who scored the only goal in his side's first La Liga win against Real Madrid since 1999. It took him just 11 minutes to score his eighth goal in seven matches this season — one more than Cristiano Ronaldo, who has taken 60 shots so far this season and the same number as Lionel Messi, who has taken 34 shots. Diego Costa, meanwhile, has only taken 21 shots.

The Brazilian born 24-year-old who recently became a Spanish citizen and might be on the verge of joining Spain's national team has never scored more than 10 goals in a domestic league season (though he did have 20 in all competitions in 2012/13). As of last year, his primary role in the Madrid derby was to serve as a target for Sergio Ramos' spit. But he has now helped Atletico win two in a row at the Santiago Bernabeu by scoring in last season's Copa del Rey final and again in Saturday's 1-0 win, ending a 23-match winless streak against Real Madrid in the league.

The honeymoon period for Carlo Ancelotti has run its course at Real Madrid and the Italian faces his first rumblings of discontent after the home defeat to Atletico Madrid in the city derby.

Real lie third in La Liga after seven games with 16 points, five adrift of champions Barcelona and Atletico who have both swept to perfect starts in a league that allows very little margin for error.

Real and Barca won the last two league titles, in 2012 and 2013 respectively, by amassing 100 points each, dropping only 14 points over their 38 games, and on current form Ancelotti's team appear to be losing their way rather than improving. In Atletico, and with this start to the campaign they (Real Madrid and Barcelona) might have lots running in their mind as Diego Simone's side keep churning the positives despite the Argentine coach claims of having them tagged non-title contenders.

Niceties aside, Atletico Madrid are keeping pace with Barcelona as they now have seven wins in as many matches and Diego Costa has eight of their 19 goals scored. Maybe Real Madrid should have spent €100 million on him over the summer if only so they wouldn't have to play against him anymore.

ARE THE GUNNERS OUT TO CONQUER OR PLAY INORDINATE?

The torpor of the closed season is over now and respective leagues have seen some big money spenders play well and pundits are beginning to call it "money well spent" for them. For Arsenal, they have always proven to be not good spenders in past seasons in the transfer market since the Ivan Gazidis reign.Inspite of that they have started well in what looks like the unexpected for a team which failed in an opening day fixture-a first since 1994. A defeat that stirred anger and made hopes of landing a silverware glimmer and belief so dim.
After the disappointing game, one of the most dreaded fandom but ever supportive groups in football -The Black Scarf Movement, displayed their grief citing that their inactivity in the closed season could cost them a title. It then wrote to the board for which their allegiance lie and then came their record signing who has been imperious afterwards. Perhaps a chance to glory after eight unsuccessful years is imminent. Who knows?
While growing up watching the great Arsenal side of the past, teams facing them had thankless task and all seems to have changed.
At the mention of names like Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit and Robert Pires who were a delight amongst the lots, you will have shivers run down your spine in fear of the then "Invincibles". Even with these names all gone, memories still run sharp in many and when Arsenal's struggle of having not won a trophy in a long while is put up, then the feeling if they can ever get to the height of the invincibles is questioned.

After the exodus of the last few years – Cesc Fabregas, Van Persie, Samir Nasri – Arsenal fans await that turning point where strength is being gained instead of lost. They are now top of the Premier League and won their first Champions League fixture in Marseille. Has the tide finally turned?
From the start I had my reservations. They seemed not to be spending but then came up with one big investment right at the end of the transfer window.
When I look at a squad I see a decent collection of players but not a top-four operation. Clearly Arsenal have a fabulous manager, a wonderful stadium and a great fan base. You would tend to give Arsène Wenger the benefit of the doubt but the depth of quality is not yet there in this squad. If Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud went back to being the players they were last year Arsenal would start to look fairly average by their standards. Ramsey looks a totally different player this term and will need to sustain that improvement.
Theo Walcott is now missing for a few games, and without that depth of quality I wonder how many players they have who are capable of winning trophies. On the other hand, they have points on the board, started well in the cup competitions and are playing with more fluency and confidence. All that looks rosy, but I would not get carried away by these early signs of promise because they still need to strengthen in one or two positions.Ozil now looks the messiah to have brought respite amongst their fans but not to say they are comfortable in my opinion as i still feel they need a competitor for Oliver Giroud irrespective of form. I mean you can't talk about the trophy-laden era of Arsenal without the luxury of one or more players in their ranks doing great things at every position of play. In truth, i have unsoured respect for Wenger that stems from the revolutionary effect he has had on the English game. Up until 2004 or so he really made Manchester United stretch. Arsenal were the best team in the country. The Invincibles were sensational as the team to beat and theirs to lose in all fronts of competition they partook in.
After the series of impressive run for the gunners and the gutsy game between them and Swansea that brought to fore a primary catalyst of change in German youngster Serge Gnabry- who had swashbuckling runs reminiscent of the legendary Thierry Henry for yet another victory against a team looking for a perfect time to bounce back, after a league cup exit as defending champions. From that moment i looked to have a rethink whether they truly are presumptive champions of this term.
Now, Arsenal look confident to roll back the years like they did with the "Invincibles"but not without new acquisitions to help out as it has shown with them that they tire out easily when the going gets tough. The depth of squad is a concern, but Wenger's philosophy of a tight, together unit is working wonders. The dressing room spirit is reaping rich rewards. With the big, much-fancied contenders struggling for consistency, something Arsenal possesses right now along with wonderful knack then it may be.
Chelsea also yet to find answers to the questions being asked by their oppositions since Mourinho second coming is another to ponder even though the journey is far but all these anomalies may want to agree with me Arsenal might just have a go at the title.
Afterall after flirting with the title race three times in the past five seasons and going eight years without a trophy, Wenger can probably begin to dream.

IS ANN READY ?

After several months of speculations of being linked to the Super Falcons job, Bayo Salau recently met with  Ex-falcons legendary goalkeeper Ann Chiejine on her position and her new role in this chat, that she could not wait to have finished in minutes but finally took time to let the cat out of the bag. Excerpts

I thought that by now you will be in the position held currently by Falcons Coach Edwin Okon, what are you doing here?

ANS -Well, i don't blow my trumpet on my own (laugh).. i mean i won the Lagos State festival last year so i don't need to tell people who i am. Ehmm...right now i am the Chief coach of the City of David  (C O D) ladies and coach of the U-17 youth tournament that is about to be played. The Lagos State Female team too preparing for the National Sport Festival next year which i am also in charge by virtue of being defending
champion so i have a whole lot i am doing.

Many have considered you ripe enough for the "hot seat" even though others feel it is too early for you to hold at least now? With all you have mentioned what exactly are your plans?

ANS - When you see a coach,(take breath).. firstly i am a qualified coach and i have my Uefa "B" licence certificate. Working with ladies as a mother, i know what it takes to work with them. They are like eggs you carry them too much with care, when they are pressed too much, then it gets broken so is when you carry them anyhow they fall, furthermore you must know how to coach them, how to take good care of them which i have been doing. They are young lads and ready to learn so whatever you want them to do it is now you show it too them, whatever position you want them to play it is now you tell them so is the magic that comes with playing football too.

How did you come about these girls you work with presently?

ANS-These are girls selected from schools, academies, and local teams, putting them together and making sure that the positives is earned out of them. In truth, i think coaching ladies have been interesting and at the same time hectic working with them.

Are you not under any pressure associated with the position you are in?

ANS- For me, I am not under pressure cos' it's what i like doing. I want to do it well to the best of my knowledge. I also thank God for the understanding that my family has got even in the face of travails. My husband also has been tremendous. My children knows mum wants to play football, mum is a coach now and wants to train players. I want to train players to be like me,that is for me called having fun and i am liking it.

The big news is your being linked to the Super falcons job. What do you have to say about this?

ANS- I am not the NFF or NFA as the case may be.They know what is best and who they want in the Job. For me, i am not afraid. I am ready to work if i am called upon and with any of the female national teams. But now i am not in a position to know who fits the job because i can't dictate to the football house.

Have you been impressed with the Super falcons lately?

ANS -Yeah! i watched them play against the U-17 boys of the Lagos State team, prior to their departing the country for Japan. It is a good one as they tried. Well there's cohesion and you still have a whole lot of time to harness the potential that lies within. The most important thing is to play together as a team and understand that my team-mate is going this way and there i should go. That way you are playing like a team should .But overall the coaches needs to do more in my opinion.

You seem to be sure of what the girls can do under the present handler especially as you feel they cohersed well but why didn't they defeat Japan?

ANS-(Exhale) I didn't see the Japan friendly so wouldn't know what transpired in it. But i must say here that a team with a 2-0 defeat to the World champions is a good team and it is a respectable score-line too for the Nigerian ladies.Perhaps subsequent meetings will be more favourable for them.

What is your story like in Playing football?

ANS- It is a long story that started way back from Secondary school, infact not in my secondary school level cos i remember playing with boys back then, and using oranges well before  football were fond memories of my early years. Before you know it i grew interest so much that i went in search of a club; i think CN Okoli was it when female football was introduced. Initially, i struggled for first team action with my club. 5-10 minutes of action is all i get to be part of matches cos i started at right full back and i was not enjoying it, but after several fringe playing role i decided to take into goalkeeping when advised by one of the coaches. Since then i never looked back.

Whilst playing football, who was your role model?

ANS- (Laugh) In goalkeeping of course i was looking up to Jorge Campos of Mexico, Casey Keller of the USA,and Gianluigi Buffon, Italy who presently has been my favourite because i like his footworks. Infact when i see them i want to do every little thing they have done .Looking at them meant so much to me during my playing days as i was into every thing they pushed for.

What do you do during your free period?

ANS- I just want to be with my family. Most of the time i am not always with them so if i have my time free, i want to dance with them, play as well with them because my time is precious as them. If i am not around, then i will know that, but once the opportunity to be with them presents itself then i will spend every time with them.

You still look so sweet even as a mother, any secret to that?

ANS- Hmmm..well when it comes to food i always watch what i eat nevertheless i think i love Eba with vegetables soup but little. At every little time i eat,i eat very little and in two, three hours i take another. I also like taking a  lot of fruits too.

Finally, your message for whoever that wants to take into football? perhaps goalkeeping

ANS- Determination, discipline, hardwork, and dedication. Then their desire will see them through

Thank you so much for you time?

ANS - It's my pleasure Bayo

NAPOLI ARE TRUE CONTENDERS

After a perfect start in all competitions, Rafa Benitez's side look good early on to mount a title challenge, argues Bayo Salau

In the 201-2012 season,Napoli ended in fifth place in the Serie A,but managed to defeat unbeaten champions Juventus in the Stadio Olimpico to win the Coppa Italia for the fourth time in the club's history, 25 years after their last cup win. A successful season in the Champions League, its first participation in the European Cup meant they are back to be counted amongst the elites of Italian football scenery.
This achievement could not have been mentioned without the talismanic forward Edison Cavani spearheading an attacking trio of Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi who departed a year earlier to the "money bags" PSG. But after losing another heavy weight during the closed transfer window,it was to wait and see the magic of being counted this term.

Some understandably had doubts when Edinson Cavani was sold to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. Napoli captain Paolo Cannavaro warned “replacing him will not be easy. I personally believed they should not have let him go. This is because they will lose much of their strength.” A month into the new season however, and Napoli arguably look stronger without him.

Three wins from three in Serie A and victory in their Champions League opener against Borussia Dortmund and it has been a perfect start to life post-Cavani. Speaking after his side’s win against the Germans, new boss Rafael Benitez was understandably delighted while trying to temper rising expectations.

Cavani may have gone, but the goals have continued to flow. In their four games played so far Napoli have netted 11 times already. Marek Hamsik alone has scored four of those. New arrivals Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Maria Callejon – both hitting the ground running following their arrival from Real Madrid – have accounted for five. Local favourite Lorenzo Insigne has been repaying the faith Benitez has shown in him with some promising displays and, of course, with his superb winner against Dortmund.

In the past, Benitez’s sides have always been known for being rather defensive-minded, but this does not appear to be the case with Napoli. While the former Liverpool boss has introduced his favoured 4-2-3-1 system, he has not abandoned the entertaining football that characterised the Walter Mazzarri years and it is paying off. Napoli lead Serie A in goals scored, have the highest average possession and have recorded the most shots per game. It is all very ‘un-Benitez’ like, but there is a good reason for this.

If Napoli have a weakness, it is in defence. In recognising this, Benitez seems to have decided to play to the team’s strengths and it’s working rather well. There is more to come, as he has warned “I am sure in one or two months we will be even better.” No doubt. This is, after all, a side that experienced a number of changes in personnel over the summer, so the players and Coach are still getting to know each other. This makes their victory over Dortmund – a side that has been together for years – all the more remarkable.

Yet at the same time it should not be all that surprising that Benitez has got his team performing at such a high level so early on his tenure. Indeed, many of his greatest successes have come early on during his reign. In his first season with Valencia back in 2001-02, he won La Liga. When he moved to Liverpool in 2004, he won the Champions League 10 months later. Even at Inter, where he was regarded as a failure and lasted only six months, he still managed to collect two titles – the Italian Super Cup and the World Club Cup. It was the same story last season at Chelsea. He was only there for eight months, but he left with a Europa League crown to his name.

Benitez has won titles at every one of his last four clubs, though many of them have come in his first season in charge. His past successes are the reason why Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis hailed his arrival as “the best signing of the summer.” The hope is that he can continue delivering titles and the early signs are certainly encouraging.

HAS EVERTON CHANGED IN STYLE OF FOOTBALL?

With the premier league increasingly having new teams to challenge for honours this term after changes in the transfer window that has seen coaches, players jump ship and result to come their way,Bayo Salau looks at how the style of football has changed at Goodison Park with change of manager.

Under David Moyes, Everton's style of play was simple but effective. Prioritising good organisation, hard work and aggression over trends and tactical modifications, his Toffees and their uncomplicated brand of fast-paced football consistently delivered results.

The appointment of Roberto Martinez signaled a change in direction, innovative and full of modern ideas, the 40-year-old Spaniard was charged with the task of adding scientific-based  style to their existing substance.
With a defeat yet to be recorded agaisnt teams thus far in the Barclays Premier League,it is apparent the transition is taking shape. .

One big thing noticed in their football is a passing for passing possession football. One that has overtaken their direct approach to games in past years but also seen them looking for a first win this campaign. I am sure more must have been told to the players concerning ball retention in the cause of the closed season.
The passing accuracy for the 2012/13 season of 79.4% has increased this term to 85.9% .A feat that has since seen them moved from 11th rank playing side to 3rd. With the ball at their feet more often, the strain on Everton's defence should be eased and, although it is early days, two clean sheets from three matches is testament to that.

Tactically,Martinez is adept at creating 3 v 2 and 2 v 1 overloads all over the pitch, with the aim of switching to space out wide, where he like his players to wreck havoc.A move that encourages Stephen Pienaar and Kelvin Mirallas to play narrow and come in to the flanks to cause damage to opposing teams, while at the same time urging both full backs to pile forward . This move in addition will cause rival wingers who must attack track back tirelessly to cover the danger.

Leighton Baines is the key man for Martinez, and the numbers prove it. Fed almost constantly by his team- mates, the left back has created more goal scoring opportunities than anyone else with his forays forward this term. His crosses alone is 24 with ten good chances created alongside thus far.

Any visit to Merseyside at this term will be seen as a fixture that won't be easy for visiting team to navigate. The reason is not far fetched as the absence of a natural holding midfielder was always a problem for Martinez men to deal with in their three games played until Gareth Barry's arrival on loan.  That they would be hoping changes after his acquisition from Manchester City.

Finally, with Everton seemingly looking a threat by evolving into a  fluid possession side, they should dominate most matches but to succeed they must not sacrifice the combative side of their game that worked so well under their former manager Moyes. Balancing style with their customary aggressionis the key for them this season

A TIME OUT WITH JOHN OGU

He was invited to the National Team (Super Eagles) after their triumph as African Champions in the 29th Edition of the Nations cup in South Africa. Bayo Salau caught-up with Academica de Coimbra midfielder, John Ogu where he spoke on his way to stardom and his plan with the Eagles and club career......

Can we meet you please?

I am John Ogu. Academica de Coimbra player in Portugal and i'm 25. And from a family of five, the first and i have got three sisters and a brother.

Apart from playing for the Eagles which for me has been a want long over-due. How did you achieved that feat of dorning the Eagles jersey, I mean your story from "grass to grace"

I started my football from the streets of Lagos with Starlets FC of Ijesha but it was Flying sport Academy that took me out of the shores of the Country to Slovenia where i played for four seasons before moving to Almeria in Spain. I am now playing for Academica de Coimbra, but had played earlier for Leria before i moved back to Academica de Coimbra .

We hardly follow the Primera division back here in the country but you had some struggles last term, but the Confederation's cup was a springboard to prove your worth to many and national selectors. How do you hope to better those achievements this term and how it's been so far?

Yeah! I  had 20 games last season with Academica. I played in the UEFA Cup and Portuguese Cup and other games. Like you said ,we had tough times and the season has started with us winning two games and having a drawn game once, so i don't want to go through rough times any longer this term. "We had a good pre-season where we won 8 in 9 games but it's a different thing now. We're working hard and hopefully we get a better result henceforth".

Now let me take you off what you did last season. You just talked about expectations and what you hope for this term. But in reality are you satisfied playing in Portugal?

Well, it isn't a bad league. I am happy to play in Portugal; i mean playing against top sides like Benfica, Braga, Porto. These are big sides in Europe. As a player you always aim to play in top clubs in Europe so at the moment i'm with Academica de Coimbra and i don't know what the future holds but i have got goals,as i want to play in top clubs, but at least for my career it's a stepping stone and i'm hoping to do well in other Countries to continue my career if the opportunity arises.

Talking about offers which club would you want to play asides Portugal?

Aside Portugal, you know the English league,(cut in)the most watched league, not really the most watched but one of the best because a lot of top players are there and you know there is the Spanish league, the German league as well  that has got fantastic individuals too. If hopefully by God's grace i find myself in one of this countries i will be grateful, so i think it takes hard-work and that i am taking step-by step.

For you, there is no under-age appearance and you took the opportunity with the Eagles by the scruff of the neck when the opportunity came calling and since became a regular. What are your plans to earn a continuum with the team?

I mean i love my country and i am so happy to wear the shirt and to be with guys .We have a great coach who wants the best from us and he is been showing it, working with him is a plus. As a player i have learnt so much from him and it's a great feeling and want to give my best in every opportunity that comes especially to score goals.
Do you have a girlfriend or a wife?

Well i don't have any wife (laugh) but if i have a girlfriend, i will keep it cos' i don't want to talk about it as i want to keep it close to my chest.

But you should tie the nuptial knot soon i guess?

Sure! when the time comes and  i mean i will do it.

Who can you attribute your success to ?

My family i would say .They were there from day one, till this day. Yeah! just my family, everyone of them have all contributed to this achievement of mine so far. So happy to have them all around me,

Finally what do you have to the new kids that one to take to football?

My advice to them is that they should pray and work hard cos i am a living witness to that. If they want to go to school they should please do so but also pursue their dream and if they don't then the dream should still be pushed till they get it. They shouldn't give up cos i am sure if i can achieve it they can also do same.

Thanks so much for speaking to us?

Yeah! thanks too

SUMMARY OF THE IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MOSCOW

The 14th edition of the IAAF world championships came to an end at the Luzhniki stadium, with the Jamaicans showing their class in the sprints, while the Russians dominated the field events. At the end, Russia dethroned the USA from the top of the medal table with a total of seven gold medals, a result the Russians have not had since the world championships,12 years back in Edmonton, Canada.
The Moscow competitions will be remembered not only for the medal count, but for many other highlights and emotions -pain, frustration, tears, and intense joy.

                                 THE SPRINTS AND LONG DISTANCES
Lightning Bolt as he is fondly called once again in Moscow, confirmed his dominance over the men's sprints, particularly with the suspended Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay absent. The Jamaican sprinter did not disappoint the Russian crowd when he coasted home to a leading time of 9.77seconds and also the second fastest time at a world championship .A feat behind the world record he set at the Berlin games in 2009.Even with lightning and sheets of rain, Bolt did not give the other competitors a chance. The Jamaican runner won his favorite 200-meter event and gave Muscovites a Russian-style farewell dance afterwards. Bolt left Moscow an eight time world champion and his plans for the future are no less grandiose:  “I don't count medals, just try to do something that no one has ever done before". That is why I want to go to Rio. I had a dream to become a legend. I fulfilled my dream at the Olympic Games in London. I want to be undefeated!”
He was joined in sprint supremacy by Jamaican compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who completed her own sprint double as 200m queen Alyson Felix had to be carried from the track. It was indeed a wonderful tournament as they went home with six gold medals.
Before all this, Mo Farah had already continued his dominance in the long distance races when he reclaimed the 10000m title he lost to Ibrahim Jeilan in 2011 before capping it all by winning the 5000m.A dominant Farah did just that, became only the second man in history to achieve the ‘’double-double’’ to win both long-distance crowns at the Olympics and the World Championships.
The 800m race also produced new champions in both the male and female angle with Mohammed Aman becoming the first man to win a medal for Ethiopia outside the 5000m and the 10000m, while Eunice sum won in a personal best time of 1:57.38. that  In the marathon, Edga Kiplagat became the first ever woman to win two consecutive title by reprising her Daegu victory in a time of (2:25.44).Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich also won for the male angle.
The 400m race brought some sought of surprise as the duo of Leshawn Meritt and Kirani James had been tipped to go head to head due to their performances in the Diamond League. Most people prediction came to pass but in the final, the young Grenadian and defending champion, James fizzled out as Leshawn merit set a new personal best of 43.74 seconds to win the title, his first since 2009.It was the same scenario in the female angle as great Britain’s Christine Ohourogu won her first world title since 2007 as she came from behind to peep the defending champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana by 4,000th of a second.
THE HURDLES
One of the most anticipated showdown lots of athletics fans couldn’t wait to see was the head to head between the trio of Brianna Rollins, Sally Pearson and Dawn Harper-Nelson in the 100m hurdles. The young American who just turned professional this year and set the third fastest time at the American trials was a revelation of some sought as she peeped the defending champion from Australia Pearson with a winning time of 12.44 seconds after a slow start.  The male 110 hurdles was won by DavidOliver after missing last year’s Olympics due to injury. In the 400m hurdles, Czech republic’s Zuzanne Hejnova won her first world title as male favorites Felix Sanchez failed to make it to the podium as the duo of Jehue Gordon and MichaelTinsley were locked in a battle but the 21 year old Trinidadian  won the race in 47.69 seconds.
In the decathlon there were fantastic memories for Ashton Eaton as he won his first world title. The female heptathlon, Ukraine’s Ganna meloicherko took the gold medal as favorites Jessica Ennis-Hill Tatyana Chernova had pulled out due to injury.

 THE FIELD EVENTS
In the long jump American Britney Reese peeped Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare by 2cm to win her third straight world title meanwhile, home favorites Alexandra Menkov treated the home fans to a delight as he won the men’s long jump. In the high jump , diamond league leader, Borhan Bondarenko shoved off competitions from Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim to win his first ever world title. In the female angle, the duo of Svetlana Skholina and Anna Chicherova took gold and silver for the Russians as young American Brigeda Barette settled for third place.
Yelena Isinbayeva did not set 28 world records, but she nevertheless left the Moscow audience wild with excitement after her 4-m-89-cm. Her victory in Moscow was a perfect finish to the Russian pole-vaulter's outstanding career.
TEARS AND ANTHEMS
The Russian women's team victory in the 4x400 meter relay has been a very long time coming: Therefore, after the finish, the athletes did not hide their emotions.
Antonina Krivoshapka, the final leg of the Russian four, did not hold back her tears in front of reporters: "For the past few years, we have come in third, second, and I really wanted finally to win. Until today, I ran in so many relays, stood on the pedestal and heard someone else's anthem. And today I heard ours, on the home field, when there was such wild support from the crowd. And I started to cry."
TWO FINISHES
London's Olympic champion Yelena Lashmanova was almost deprived of Moscow gold in the 20-kilometer race-walk because of an unfortunate misunderstanding. After she entered the stadium, she ran 100 meters and stopped — but there was still a full lap to go before the finish.
Fortunately, someone told the athlete that the race had not yet ended, and the drama did not become a tragedy.

DANCES AND NAKED TORSORS
Many athletes in Moscow did not hide their feelings. Robert Harting of Germany, winner in the discus throw, tore off his shirt immediately after his victory, as he has been known to do before. After winning the steeplechase, Ezekiel Kemboi tied the Kenyan flag to himself and did a national dance.
The World Championships were largely contested in a sparsely populated Luzhniki Stadium, the silence a world away from the carnival atmosphere of the London 2012 Olympics. A view Bolt, says were "a seven out of 10", with athletics' biggest star going on to say that a lack of capacity crowds led him to believe that the event had "not been the best".

WHO IS TO WIN?

As New York gears up for the fourth grand slam of the year and the world awaits in anticipation, Bayo Salau writes on the preview of the US open, stats around players that could be in the running for yet another milestone in the 133rd edition of the US open.

It’s hard to believe, but we are just days from the final grand slam of 2013 kicking off. And if this most recent draw is any indication, the slam season might have saved the best for the last.
On the men’s court, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could meet in the quarters again. All eyes will be on those two longtime elites to live up their end of the bargain this time.
Last year’s finalist, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, the winner of the 2012 edition also poised for another meeting in the semi finals. But have you ponder on who the cap of this edition would fit?
After winning his first grand slam last year, reached the Australian open final though lost to Novak Djokovic at the start of 2013, he was forced to skip the Roland Garros owing to injury. Andy Murray cam e back stronger to storm into the record books by clinching Britain’s first grand slam in 77years.
Beside his grand slam success, his scintillating performance form on hard court surface makes him a strong favourite, and will be looking forward to avenge his Cincinnati masters defeat in the hands of Micheal Llodra, once the opening fixture of the round resumes.

For Rafael Nadal, It’s unfortunate that despite such an impressive return from a seven moth injury, one of the most memorable moments of the Spaniard season was being ousted by Steve Darvis in the first round of Wimbledon. That said the undisputed  ‘king of clay’ who have gone to clinch the French open title number eight this year, is on track to claim the same accolade when flushing meadows gets under way.
He goes into the hard court event with back-back trophy in Montreal and Cincinnati as one reason to believe he can despite not too convincing records on the surface,  with one hard court surface title- the US open to boast of amongst twelve to have been won by him.
It may also be true that the tournament is not his best of his 12 grand slams title, but it’s a case of write him off at your own peril.
While Novak Djokovic who can’t be ruled out of the hard court tournament owing to his form books;but one thing for sure is that a repeat of last year’s final won’t be seen . The Serbian plays Briton’s Andy Murray in the Semi finals if only they both scale the hurdles before then. The world number one opens his campaign to Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis. Another notable name to participate is Roger Federer and it will be the first time the Big Swiss won’t be in the top four seed since 2002.
Meanwhile the women’s side may yet again see a big star missed out as Russia Maria Sharapova misses out due to injury but won’t deny us the excitement we crave as her replacement Agnieska Radwanska, comes in with lots to prove this term. More importantly, she shoots to 3rd spot with Sara Errani up to the all-important No 4 spot.
However, most of the focus will be on Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka to see if they can both get to the final. Despite defeat to Azarenka in the Cincinnati final, Williams is, as ever in devastating form going into the US open and is pretty safe for the title.
Terrifyingly for her opponents, she has only lost five matches this year and has taken three out of  the last five grand slams. Even though on the downside the hardcourt has not been friend to her as four of those five defeats came on the surface. It’s  a surprise to many that loses have come on this type of court normally her best – but nonetheless there’s no doubting just how hungry she will be for the title.
Again the one major contender, Victoria Azarenka push this time won’t be ordinary as there could not have been a better preparation going into a grand slam than the way she took apart the American in Cincinnati few days before.
Such is Azarenka’s position ahead of flushing meadows, the Belarusian can, and should, be feeling like anything is possible in NYC. But would you in any way want to doubt her credentials? Absolutely not, as she started the year with the defence of her Australian open crown which she followed with same feat in Qatar. Though the following period was marred by an ankle injury but looked to have recovered from by the time the French open came calling. The world no 2 reached the final four at Roland Garros and forced to withdraw in the second round of Wimbledon –a retirement that ended her run of of four consecutive grand slams semi-finals.
Yet to win the US open, but she gave it her best shot by getting to the final where she lost to Serena Williams and this term she would have built her confidence with couple of wins over the American recently especially the last which was the Cincinnnati masters days back. There’s absolutely no reason the Belarusian can’t go one better.
Others poised for triumph could come in mould of Agnieska Radwanska who after winning two hardcourt tournaments went all blazing and ready to rumble against her adversaries but instead she fumbled playing against them in the course of the season. The question now is can she upset the apple carts after Sharapova’s withdrawal?
So far she is not been able to deal with the top five ranked player in the women’s tour since March 2012. A record she will not like to be told or read about. Worse still is the record against likely last four or final opponents Williams and Azarenka is a combined 0-13. Do not also rule out the likes of Li Na, Sera Errani, and Czech Petra Kvitova.
Also if you are wondering where Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli is, she decided (somewhat out of the blue) to retire after defeat in Cincinnati.

MOYES - TO SUPPORT OR TO LOATHE

To many the announcement of David Moyes as the new Manchester United gaffer comes as a surprise, but one Sir Alex Ferguson had had in mind since the era of the Ex-Toffes manager at Preston North-End in the early 2000s. Today the Scot finally had his wish granted by the United Glazer's family ahead of the fancied Jose Mourinho, who many feels has got the credentials to lead the Red-devils after earlier stint with Premier league rivals Chelsea where he made his mark before sojourning around hosts of other clubs across Europe.
His reign as United Manager started inauspiciously, with a 1-0 defeat to a mighty Singh All star team in Bangkok, one that had some exciting young lads on parade with the big guns in absentia owing to backlogs of injuries to top performers;but his team soon found their feet again- this time against A league All stars.
They thumped the Australian Side 3-1 in Sydney before heading off to Japan to play the Yokohama F-Marinos .
They lost 3-2 before drawing their foutrh of the tour against Crezo Osaka two all to share the Yanmar premium cup.
A first loss had brought into fore of Sir Alex losing his first game in charge as Manager of the Old-trafford Club back in 1986, when his then United side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Oxford United.
A defeat seen by many as one not to be overblown as Sir AlexFeruson's first in charge should perhaps come as solace for the Scot- a symmetry perhaps as it was described.
After four games and one more left against Kitchee in their tour of Asia, it looks that the reality of the enormityof a club like Manchester United, soon be sinking after seeing the scale of the fan-base worldwide.
The fact that a consistency norm in the use of these younger players has now reposed new belief in the tactics of Moyes and United's faithful. Furthermore the new generation of stars can once again be the cynosure in his reign and one to lean with, thus the pardon for not receiving sticks from fans but support that was again the thrust of Fergie's words in departute - only time will tell.
The one many problem on hand to deal with is the future of striker Wayne Rooney after several speculations linking him away from the club but nerves have so far been calm over the English man, so also is  no denying the fact that the club purported move for Ex- Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas recently, from Barcelona could be the missing peg.
A thing of worry no doubt is questions about the performance of the team whether its worth the patient or not ? But a sure bet is that the activities in the closed season for the Old Trafford landlord could further enhance and bring about the drastic change to move the club even more to greater heights.

Why not! as the acronym of the new Manager suggest- Make Other Years Exceedingly Successful

D'Tigers Lose First Friendly In the US

Venezuela
Credit: Hector Contreras

The Nigerian Basketball Team fell 82-86 to Venezuela in a game that served as a build up to both teams Continental aspirations. Despite leading for most of the game, the Nigerian team lost their way in the fourth as a barrage of three pointers from Venezuela sent the game into overtime.

Ben Uzoh during the Summer LeagueWith a starting five of Ben Uzoh (pic), Stan Okoye, Jamal Olasewere, Michael Eric and Olumide Oyedeji, the Nigerian team came out strong and it showed as they took the first half 33-27. D’Tigers looked in control throughout the game, with former New Jersey Nets guard Ben Uzoh showing his quality from the point guard position, Uzoh was proving very difficult to stop keeping his dribble in tight situations, and when he was not able to find the open man, he converted easily on a series of nifty moves to the basket. On the inside, Lagos born Centre, Michael Eric who was making his debut for the National team was a threat on both ends of the floor, his ability to play with his back to the basket coupled with his defensive strength gave the Venezuelans problems throughout contest.

Another player who impressed on his debut was NEC player of the year Jamal Olasewere. Olasewere’s strength and speed caused a lot of problems for the Venezuelans on the open court, and defensively he provided the team with a lot of steel.

As the game went on, the Nigerian team were unable to take advantage of a once comfortable lead, as the Venezuelans fought their way back into the game. With seconds left in regulation, Venezuela hit a three from the left corner to tie the game, and although Ben Uzoh would score on the ensuing possession, the basket was waived off as it was deemed to have come right after the buzzer. Overtime saw the Venezuelans grow in confidence as they continued from where they left off, and despite the efforts of Michael Eric to bring the team back, D”tigers will leave it a little to late as the sound of the final buzzer finally came. The team must now regroup for the next two games which will also be against Venezuela in Florida. More players are expected to join the team as camp continues. Game 2 is on Monday 29th July in Orlando,Florida.

Nigeria Cricket National team taking part at the Pepsi International Cricket Council, World Cricket League division 6, in Jersey bounced back from yesterday's defeat to host nation Jersey by beating Bahrain with 8 wickets.

The Asian side who won the toss and batted first were reduced to 104 runs all out in 33 overs, no thanks to opening Bowler Saheed Akolade, who grabbed 6 wickets while his efforts was complemented by in-form Seye Olympio, who also had 3 wickets.
Insipid batting from opening Batsman Segun Olayinka with 50 runs not out ensured that Nigeria coasted to their third victory in four games.

The Nigerian team had earlier defeated Vanatu, Kuwait, before the Bahrain victory but lost to Jersey and will be hoping to beat South American nation, Argentina with a qualification to the World Cricket Division 5 all to fight for.

Atletico Miniero were crowned Copa Libertadores Champion for the first time after beating Paraguayan opponents Olimpia in penalties.

After a 2-0 deficit in the first leg in Asuncion, the Brazilian side, coached by Cuca, managed to wipe out their deficit inside 90 minutes thanks to goals from Jo and Leandro Silva.

Following a goalless extra time period they then edged the shoot-out 4-3,prompting scenes of jubilations in the camp, with former Ac Milan and Barcelona playmaker, Ronaldinho, saying" I came back to Brazil for this"

The opening goal came in the second minutes of the second half as Ronaldinho, crossed and Wilson Pittoni failed to clear properly, allowing Jo to beat Martin Silva.
A header from the same player was kept out by Silva following a Ronaldinho free kick, and Olimpia's hopes were hit when defender Julio Menzor was given a marching order with six minutes remaining.

In the Shoot-out Aletico Miniero's Alecsandro, Guilherme, Jo and Leandro Silva all converted, while goalkeeper Victor saved Miranda's opening attempt that put Olimpia in trouble.
The title was decided with Gimenez hit the post from Olimpia's fifth as Atletico Miniero earned a place in the Fifa Club World Cup to be played in Morroco in December.
